Talk: Quilts of Necessity, Quilts of Leisure

Bakewell Old House Museum - Cunningham Place, Bakewell BD45 1DD

6.45PM for 7.00pm in the Tudor Hall, Bakewell Old House Museum.

Everyone knows about patchwork and quilting: poor people took pieces of old clothes and made them into patchwork quilts for a little extra warmth on their beds. Well … yes, sometimes and in some circumstances. But how does this explain the glorious Georgian coverlets made with expensive Indian chintz fabrics or the intricate patchworks of silk and velvet made by the Victorians? Join Liz Whitehouse to explore ‘Quilts of Necessity, Quilts of Leisure’.

Liz Whitehouse
Brought up in a ‘sewing household’, Liz learned dressmaking from her mother and embroidery from her aunts, but did not discover patchwork and quilting until she became the Chief Executive of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles in 2010. As well as learning how to make patchwork and quilting, Liz became fascinated with the historic quilts in The Quilters’ Guild Collection. She joined the British Quilt Study Group (a Special Interest Group of The Guild) and for the last three years has been the Group’s Co-ordinator (Chair).
She has volunteered with quilts and textiles at Beck Isle Museum, Pickering, and Barnsley Museums, in addition to serving on the Collections Committee for The Quilters’ Guild Collection.
