Peak District Pubs
A pint-sized social history
Bakewell Old House Museum - Cunningham Place, Bakewell BD45 1DD
Local writer Andrew McCloy gives an illustrated (and hopefully sober) talk on the role of local pubs in Peak District life, from the humble ale house catering for miners and farmhands through to busy coaching inns and modern road houses.
There are plenty of surprises along the way, including historic and haunted inns, unusual bar games and an explanation of some unique pub names, plus one or two Peak District pubs which are not what they seem at all.
We look back at some of the memorable local inns and taverns that have disappeared over the years, but also consider recent changes brought about by local brewing, new micro pubs and community owned establishments.
